A PICTORIAL RECORD OF EARLY 20TH CENTURY OUTBACK SOUTH AUSTRALIA

This unique collection of photographs of people and places in northern South Australia was taken by Alice Mary Hopewell between the years 1907 and 1917.

Alice was given her first camera in around 1907 when her family moved to Farina.  It was a big old Kodak with bellows.  Most of the developing and printing was done during the cool of the night as this was an impossible task during the daytime heat of outback South Australia.

Some earlier photos either collected by Alice or from family albums and portraits of family friends have also been included.

The collection covers the following locations and many others - check the drop down galleries:

Photographs of Aboriginal and Afghan people feature throughout the collection and within their own galleries.  Check the galleries from the menus to see them all.

Please Note:  This website contains images and names of Aboriginal people who have died.
